Daniella Zalcman -- Diggers

Daniella Zalcman, a photojournalist based in New York and London, is perhaps best-known for her work making double exposure images, both as the co-founder of the Echosight Instagram feed and with her long-term project, "Signs of Your Identity," about the legacy of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools.

“Diggers” comes from a larger project, “To Make the Wasteland Grow,” about off-the-grid communities founded by people determined to consume less and to live more independently.

The diggers of Runnymede Eco Village managed to keep their community going for three years, until March, 2015, when the group was served with an eviction notice. Although they fought the order, the entire site was destroyed in September 2015. This project is a record of a community trying to redefine what is required for human survival and human happiness, intentionally unmoored from modern society.

“I started this larger project on off grid living because we clearly are in complete denial about how destructive humanity's footprint has become,” says Zalcman. “I think there are a lot of different solutions available, and I wanted to see practically what it meant to consciously choose a life of less consumption and more energy/food independence.”
